Author: Mel Gurtov

I am Professor Emeritus of Political Science at Portland State University (Oregon) and Senior Editor of Asian Perspective, an international affairs quarterly, after many years (1994-2017) as Editor-in-Chief. I have published 30 books on the international politics of East Asia, US foreign policy, and human-security issues. My latest books are America in Retreat: Foreign Policy Under Donald Trump (Rowman & Littlefield, 2020); Engaging Adversaries: Peacemaking and Diplomacy in the Human Interest (Rowman & Littlefield, 2018) and Will This Be China's Century? A Skeptic's View (Lynne Rienner Publishers, 2013) This blog is dedicated to promoting ideas, policies, and organizations that seek to advance international understanding and the quality of life, especially for the largely impoverished global majority. I do not purport to represent the human interest; but my analysis of world affairs does seek to promote the human interest, guided above all by humane values and ideals rather than by the interests of governments or corporations. As a global citizen, my priorities are social justice, environmental protection, human rights, and peace. Greed, injustice, and violence are my targets; and diplomacy focused on engagement is my preferred strategy for transcending differences. Einstein once said that “those who have the privilege to know have the duty to act." I write with that sense of responsibility. I live in Deadwood, a very small community in western Oregon, where I help my wife in the beautiful Heirloom apple orchard she has created.

15 Mar 201627 Feb 2017
Donald Trump says he “knows” China. He “likes” China, in fact “loves” China.  And so long as the Chinese do exactly as he wants, he’ll continue loving China.  And that’s…

Post #109: Donald Trump—From One Tyrant to Another

3 Mar 201627 Feb 2017
One thing I discovered long ago about tyrants: they love other tyrants. They’re a mutual admiration/suffering society.  When one succeeds by extinguishing dissent, the others applaud; and when one falls,…

Post #107 – Is US-Russia Engagement Still Possible?

President Obama’s failed attempt to “reset” US-Russia relations raises the question whether or not engaging Russia in the fullest sense is still possible. I think not, at least for the…

Post #105: Time for a Reset in US-Saudi Relations

27 Jan 201627 Feb 2017
The growing rift between Saudi Arabia and Iran is reportedly causing great consternation in US policymaking circles (www.nytimes.com/2016/01/05/us/politics/us-struggles-to-explain-alliance-with-saudis.html).  Once again, US officials are called upon to decide whether to…
